Is there a generic of Citranatal B-Calm?
Citranatal B-Calm is a brand-name specialty supplement for pregnant women in their first trimester and is available only with a prescription. No comparable brand-name or generic versions contain only the four vitamins and minerals in Citranatal B-Calm. You may, however, be able to purchase each of these four ingredients (vitamin B6, folic acid, calcium, and iron) separately as generic over-the-counter supplements. When considering switching to over-the-counter alternatives, always keep in mind that over-the-counter supplements are not regulated in the same way as prescription supplements. They may not match the quality and effectiveness of prescription supplements.
What is Citranatal B-Calm?
Citranatal B-Calm is a prescription dietary supplement formulated for pregnant women in their first trimester. The active ingredients in Citranatal B-Calm are vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B9 (folic acid), calcium, and iron.
Citranatal B-Calm contains 75 mg of vitamin B6 to help reduce symptoms of morning sickness. Studies indicate that vitamin B6 may reduce vomiting but does not seem to be effective at reducing nausea.
Folic acid and calcium help support the overall development of the fetus. Iron helps prevent iron-deficiency anemia, a condition in which there is a shortage of red blood cells in the mother because of the iron needs of the growing fetus.
The iron in Citranatal B-Calm is a dual formula that includes carbonyl iron (almost pure iron) and ferrous gluconate, an iron salt. Carbonyl iron is immediately absorbed by the intestines and used by the body. Ferrous gluconate is more gradually absorbed and used by the body and has fewer gastrointestinal side effects.
What are the side effects of Citranatal B-Calm?
The most common side effects of Citranatal B-Calm include, but are not limited to, constipation, diarrhea, stomach cramps, diarrhea, upset stomach, or black or bloody stools. Allergic reactions to vitamins are very rare.
Although iron is a naturally occurring and critical part of our diet, overdosing on iron can lead to iron poisoning and even death. Always follow your doctor's instructions or the suggested dosage on the supplement.
