What is the brand name of Prenaissance?
Prenaissance is a branded generic prescription prenatal multivitamin, that is, it is a brand-name product sold as at generic prices. It is nearly identical to the generic prenatal multivitamin, PNV DHA, also manufactured by Acella. Similar prescription products include Obtrex DHA and Duet Dual DHA. There is no specific generic version of Prenaissance, but its key ingredients are found in over-the-counter prenatal multivitamin formulas, such as Prenate Essential and Enfamil Expecta.
What is Prenaissance?
Prenaissance is a generic prescription prenatal multivitamin to meet the unique dietary demands a woman faces while pregnant or in the months following childbirth.
The vitamins and minerals in Prenaissance are folate (vitamin B6), cobalamin (vitamin B12), vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, calcium, magnesium, and docosahexaeonoic acid (DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid).
All B vitamins are critical for the developing fetus and the mother. In particular, folate (vitamin B9) supports the growth of the fetus's central nervous system and is a key component in the production of red blood cells, as is cobalamin. Iron, too, is a crucial part of the red blood cell because it carries oxygen to the cells. Deficiencies in pyridoxine, folate, and iron are very common in pregnant women and lead to anemia, a shortage of healthy red blood cells.
Omega-3 fatty acids are often included in prenatal and postnatal supplements because they support the growth of a fetus's brain and retina.
Iron supplements often have constipation and hard stools as a side effect, so Prenaissance includes a stool softener laxative, docusate, to prevent these side effects.
Prenaissance is taken as softgel once daily.
What are the side effects of Prenaissance?
Side effects from multivitamins, though rare, include but are not limited to constipation, diarrhea, or upset stomach. The iron in Prenaissance, ferrous fumarate, can cause constipation, hard stools, and dark stools. Prenaissance includes docusate, a stool softener laxative, to help prevent these side effects.
Allergic reactions to vitamins are very rare, but Prenaissance contains inactive ingredients such as lecithin that may cause an allergic reaction.
Multivitamins with minerals, such as Prenaissance, taken in large doses can result in side effects and injury. Pyridoxine continually taken in excess can cause irreversible nerve damage. Iron, an essential part of our diet, is toxic at high doses, and calcium can cause high blood calcium. Always follow the dosage recommended in the instructions or by your prescribing physician.
