Is there a generic of Foltrate?
Foltrate is a brand-name but generically-priced prescription folate (vitamin B9) supplement with vitamin B12. Other prescription folate and B12 supplements often include other supplements, such as iron. Both the active ingredients are widely available in both brand-name and generic over-the-counter supplements, but the quality and effectiveness of these supplements are not as reliable as prescription supplements.
What is Foltrate?
Foltrate is a brand-name prescription vitamin B9 (folate) and B12 (cyanocobalamin) supplement to treat folic acid deficiency due to age or poor nutrition. Both vitamin B9 and B12 are vital to the body's production of red blood cells. Deficiencies in these vitamins may cause anemia, a condition in which there are not enough red blood cells to carry oxygen to the body's tissues. Deficiencies in either vitamin cause distinct types of anemia. A shortage of B9 results in folate-deficiency anemia and a shortage of B12 causes pernicious anemia as well as nerve damage and spinal cord degeneration.
Foltrate is specifically prescribed to patients who have or are at risk for folate deficiency and folate-deficiency anemia. Folate supplements, however, often “hide” vitamin B12 deficiency and delay the diagnosis of pernicious anemia, particularly in elderly or pregnant patients. Blood cell counts may improve with folate supplements, but the neurological damage caused by a B12 deficiency still progresses. For this reason, Foltrate also includes vitamin B12.
Foltrate is taken as a single tablet once per day.
Common side effects of Foltrate are not common and are usually mild, such as stomach upset, nausea, or diarrhea. Allergic reactions to the active ingredients in Foltrate (folic acid and cyanocobalamin) are extremely rare. Allergic reactions are more likely to be provoked by the inactive ingredients. As with any supplement or medication, watch for signs of an allergic reaction, such as rash, itching, trouble breathing, or facial swelling. Discontinue use of Foltrate if you experience an allergic reaction and seek emergency medical treatment.
