Epclusa is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Gilead Sciences Inc. The generic version of this drug is sofosbuvir-velpatasvir.
Epclusa is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat hepatitis C, which is an infection of the liver caused by a virus. This medication works by reducing the amount of hepatitis C virus in your body. This helps your immune system fight the infection and may help your liver recover. Chronic hepatitis C infection can cause serious liver problems such as scarring or liver cancer.
Epclusa can be used in adults and children 3 years and older. Epclusa treats certain genotypes of hepatitis C. Your healthcare provider will order tests to make sure Epclusa is the appropriate treatment for you.
Epclusa may also be used with ribavirin to treat scarring of the liver.
Epclusa is sometimes used in patients who also have HIV. However, Epclusa does not treat HIV or AIDS.
Read the instructional leaflet and Medication Guide provided with this medication before you begin use. This medication comes in the form of an oral tablet that can be taken with or without food. It is also available as a pellet that comes in a packet and can be taken directly in the mouth or mixed with a spoonful of soft food, like pudding. The pellets should not be chewed.
Take your medication daily as directed. Continue using this medication until your full prescription is complete, even if your symptoms go away early. Stopping this medication too early may result in a return of your infection. Refill your prescription several days before you need it, so that you do not run out.
Before taking Epclusa, tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions, especially if you:
Are breastfeeding
Are a hepatitis B virus carrier
Are immunocompromised
Have diabetes
Have both a hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection
Tell your doctor about any allergies to medications, and all of the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Epclusa interacts with certain drugs, such as the antibiotic rifampin, the supplement St. John’s Wort, and the anticonvulsant Tegretol (carbamazepine). Epclusa also interacts with antacids. If you need to take an antacid, then use it at least four hours after using Epclusa.
Other drug interactions may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for a full list of drug interactions.
Epclusa may cause side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, headaches, tiredness, weakness, irritability, or difficulty sleeping. Talk to your doctor if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have serious side effects.
Serious allergic reactions to this medication are usually rare. However, you should seek emergency medical attention if you begin to experience symptoms of a serious allergic reaction such as hives, trouble breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
If you have previously had hepatitis B, it may come back or worsen. Call your healthcare professional if you have upper stomach pain, vomiting, appetite loss, or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.
Talk to your doctor or healthcare provider for full medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Epclusa as this is not a complete list of side effects.
