What is the brand name of Entecavir?

Generic Entecavir is manufactured by several manufacturers such as Amneal Pharmaceuticals LLC, Breckenridge Pharmaceutical, Inc., Par Pharmaceutical, Inc., and others. Entecavir is sold under the brand-name Baraclude.

What is Entecavir?

Entecavir is an antiviral medicine used as a long-term treatment for chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Hepatitis B is an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis B virus. Prolonged infection results in liver damage, liver cancer in some cases, and liver failure.

Entecavir belongs to a class of drugs known as hepatitis B virus nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, or nucleoside analogs. This drug helps to lower the amount of hepatitis B virus in your body.

Before taking Entecavir be sure to inform your healthcare provider if you have or have ever had HIV or AIDS (or if you have been exposed to HIV), kidney disease, liver problems other than HBV, a liver transplant; or if you also take lamivudine (Epivir, Epzicom, Trizivir) or telbivudine (Tyzeka).

Your doctor should also know if you are pregnant or if you become pregnant while taking Entecavir. It may not be safe to breastfeed while using this medicine. Talk to your doctor about any risks involved with pregnancy and breastfeeding.

It should be noted that this prescription drug is not a cure for the hepatitis B virus, but it decreases the amount of virus in the body.

What are the side effects of Entecavir?

Common side effects of Entecavir can include nausea, dizziness, tired feeling, or headache.

Lactic acidosis, a dangerous buildup of lactic acid in your blood, may develop while taking Entecavir. An enlarged liver and spleen may also occur. These conditions can be fatal. Get emergency medical help if you have unusual muscle pain, trouble breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, feeling cold, or feel very weak or tired. Severe liver symptoms can also occur while taking Entecavir. Alert your doctor at once if you have: swelling around your midsection, nausea, lower stomach pain, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of eyes).

There are additional side effects that patients may experience. Seek medical advice from your doctor about other possible side effects that may occur and how to address them. You can call the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to report side effects you experience.
