What is Ursodiol?

Ursodiol is a bile acid that decreases the amount of cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed by the intestines. Ursodiol helps break down cholesterol that has formed into stones in the gallbladder. Ursodiol also increases bile flow in patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (a condition where the bile ducts in your liver are destroyed). This drug cannot treat gallstones that are calcified.

When using Ursodiol you should follow all instructions on your prescription label. You should not take this drug in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. Ursodiol has not been studied beyond 24 months of use. When treating gallstones, you may have to use Ursodiol for several months before they dissolve.

Ursodiol should not be used if you are allergic to it, or if you have an obstruction in your liver or gallbladder. If you're going to give Ursodiol to a child, tell your pediatrician if your child has a blockage in the bile duct. (However, the prescribing information states that Ursodiol has not been evaluated for safety and efficacy in children.) Before taking this drug, you should let your doctor know about any other medications you may be taking in order to avoid negative drug interactions.

What are the side effects of Ursodiol?

Headaches, nausea, constipation, dizziness, mild stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhea, cold- or flu-like symptoms, or hair loss are all common side effects associated with Ursodiol.

Seek immediate medical attention if you notice any signs of an allergic reaction, which is very rare. Signs include hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

This is not a complete list of side effects that can occur when using Ursodiol. Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider to get medical advice about side effects. You can also report side effects to the FDA.
