What is Acetaminophen-Codeine?

Acetaminophen-Codeine is a generic prescription drug that relieves moderate to moderately severe pain. Acetaminophen-Codeine is also the active ingredient in Tylenol with Codeine.

Codeine is an opioid that binds to pain receptors in the brain, so pain signals to the brain are either partly blocked or completely stopped. Acetaminophen is an analgesic (pain reliever) and fever reducer. How acetaminophen works on the body to reduce pain is not well understood.

Acetaminophen-Codeine is recommended for short-term pain management. As the dose or length of treatment increases, the side effects of codeine become greater than the pain-killing benefits.

Acetaminophen-Codeine is taken as a tablet every four hours. The dose will depend on the severity of the pain. Effects should be evident within an hour of taking Acetaminophen-Codeine.

What are the side effects of Acetaminophen-Codeine?

Common side effects of Acetaminophen-Codeine include, but are not limited to, dry mouth, headache, nausea, vomiting, constipation, weakness, itching, upset stomach, sweating, liver problems, blurred vision, ringing in the ears, dark urine, clay-colored stools, and problems with urination.

Codeine is an opioid, so commonly experienced side effects will include sedation, drowsiness, dizziness, and lightheadedness. Mental and mood changes caused by codeine include mental clouding, stupor, euphoria, unusual thoughts, unusual behaviors, anxiety, nervousness, depression, and suicide.

Acetaminophen overdose is also dangerous. Acetaminophen is toxic to the liver and abusing the codeine in Acetaminophen-Codeine may cause additional liver damage on account of the acetaminophen.
