Xigduo Xr is a brand-name prescription drug for dapagliflozin-metformin manufactured by AstraZeneca. There is not a generic alternative to Xigduo Xr.
Xigduo Xr is a combination of two medications, dapagliflozin and metformin, which are used to help control blood sugar, along with diet and exercise, in people with Type 2 diabetes. Dapagliflozin, an ingredient in this combination drug, is also FDA-approved to:
Reduce the risk of hospitalization for heart failure in adults with Type 2 diabetes and heart disease (or multiple risk factors for heart disease)
Reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure in adults with heart failure classified as NYHA class II-IV with reduced ejection fraction
Reduce the risk of kidney problems and cardiovascular death and hospitalization in adults with chronic kidney disease
Xigduo Xr (dapagliflozin-metformin) contains two ingredients. Dapagliflozin is classified as an SGLT2 inhibitor. It works by helping the kidneys get rid of glucose. Metformin is a biguanide drug that lowers glucose production in the liver and causes your intestines to absorb less glucose.
You should not use Xigduo Xr if you are allergic to either ingredient or similar ingredients. Also, you should not take Xigduo Xr if you have moderate to severe kidney problems or are on dialysis. Your healthcare provider will order blood tests to check how well your kidneys work before and during your treatment with this prescription drug. Xigduo Xr cannot be used to treat Type 1 diabetes, nor is it recommended to be used by children.
Some—but not all—common possible side effects of Xigduo Xr include nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, back pain, and headache. Dizziness is also common. Stand up slowly when getting up from a sitting or lying down position to minimize dizziness.
Vaginal yeast infections and yeast infections of the penis can also occur. These infections can be serious. Get medical help immediately if you have symptoms in the genital or rectal area such as: burning, itching, odor, pain, tenderness, discharge, swelling, or redness—or if you have a fever or feel ill.
Serious allergic reactions are rare. Get emergency medical attention if you have hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Metformin, one of the ingredients in Xigduo Xr, can induce ovulation, which can result in unintended pregnancy. If you do not wish to become pregnant, talk to your healthcare provider about effective birth control.
Metformin can also cause a rare but fatal, side effect called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous buildup of lactic acid in the blood, and this condition can cause death. Notify your healthcare provider immediately or get emergency medical help if you have muscle pain, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, or dizziness—or if you feel cold, weak, or unusually tired. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. It can cause low blood sugar and can also increase the risk of lactic acidosis.
This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur, including serious side effects. Consult your healthcare provider for more information and a full list of adverse effects.
Xigduo Xr should be taken once daily in the morning. Take with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet whole. Do not cut, chew, or crush the tablet. If you have difficulty swallowing the tablet, notify your healthcare provider.
Xigduo Xr may cause weight loss, as seen in clinical studies. The average weight loss among people who took Xigduo XR was about 3%. For example, someone with a starting weight of 200 lbs may lose about 6 lbs while taking Xigduo Xr. However, results vary based on individual factors such as other medical conditions and lifestyle changes you make while taking this medication.
Xigduo Xr starts working in a few hours, but it may take at least a week to see the full effect of this medication. Ask your healthcare provider for medical advice on how often you should monitor your blood sugar.
