Is there a generic version of Vitafol-One?

Vitafol-One is a brand-name prescription prenatal multivitamin. There is not a generic version of Vitafol-One, but its key ingredients are found in other brand-name prenatal multivitamin formulas, such as Prenate Essential, as well as branded generics such as Obtrex DHA and Taron Prex. You can search the SingleCare website for more information and savings on these products. In addition, all of the active ingredients in Vitafol-One are universally available singly or in combination in numerous generic and over-the-counter dietary supplements. Before considering over-the-counter alternatives, however, talk to a licensed medical practitioner. Over-the-counter supplements are not as well-regulated as prescription supplements. Quality, safety, and effectiveness can vary widely between products.

What is Vitafol-One?

Vitafol-One is a brand-name prescription prenatal multivitamin for women during pregnancy or in the months afterward. It is formulated to support the growth of a fetus or nursing baby with vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acid (DHA) as well as maintain the nutritional health of the mother.

Whereas most nutritional needs are met through diet alone, pregnant and nursing mothers are often advised or prescribed nutritional supplements, particularly folate (vitamin B9), iron, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), cobalamin (vitamin B12), and omega fatty acids, as well as other vitamins.

The active ingredients in Vitafol-One includes B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), vitamin E, iron, iodine, magnesium, zinc, copper, and DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid.

All the B-complex vitamins and vitamin C are critical to cell metabolism and tissue growth in the developing fetus. Folate (vitamin B9) is a highly critical nutrient that supports the growth of the fetus's central nervous system. Vitafol-One also includes iron to prevent iron-deficiency anemia in the mother and support red blood cell production in the fetus. Vitamin D is a critical ingredient for fetal bone growth. DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, supports the baby’s  brain and vision and helps the baby reach an optimal birth weight.

Vitafol-One is taken as a softgel capsule once per day.

What are the side effects of Vitafol-One?

Possible side effects from multivitamins, though rare, include, but are not limited to constipation, diarrhea, or upset stomach. Allergic reactions to vitamins are very rare. Vitafol-One contains soybean oil and so should be used with caution by people with soy allergies.

Multivitamins with minerals, such as Vitafol-One, taken in large doses can result in side effects from excess mineral intake, such as stomach upset, muscle weakness, stomach bleeding, kidney stones, and even heavy metal poisoning. Iron, in particular, can be toxic at high doses. Always follow the dosage recommended in the instructions or by a licensed healthcare practitioner.

Because accidental iron overdose is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in young children, keep these prenatal vitamins out of the reach of children. Consult your doctor for additional information and medical advice.
