What is Retacrit?

Retacrit is used to treat anemia in patients with long-term serious kidney disease, patients receiving zidovudine to treat HIV, and patients receiving chemotherapy for some types of cancer. It may also be used in anemic patients to reduce the need for blood transfusions before certain planned surgeries. This medication works like a human protein called erythropoietin to help your body make more red blood cells.

This FDA-approved medication is given as an injection under the skin or into a vein, usually one to three times a week. Patients receiving this medication before surgery may have a special dosing schedule. If you are using this medication at home, learn all the usage and preparation instructions from your doctor.

This medication should not be shaken. Check this product visually for particles or discoloration before use. If either is present, do not use this liquid. Clean the injection site with rubbing alcohol before each dose. Do not inject Retacrit into any area of the skin that is tender, red, bruised, or hard. Recommended injection sites include the upper arms, abdomen, front of the middle thighs, or upper outer area of the buttocks. Changing the injection site each time will lessen the risk of injury under the skin.

What are the side effects of Retacrit?

Common side effects include headaches, body aches, cough, or injection site irritation. Consult with your healthcare professional or pharmacist if you experience any of these effects and they persist or worsen. Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects.

In rare cases, this medication may cause serious problems from blood clots, such as heart attacks, stroke, and blood clots in the legs or lungs. You may be at an increased risk for blood clots if you are severely dehydrated or have a history of blood clots. Get immediate medical help if you experience shortness of breath, unusual sweating, confusion, sudden dizziness, trouble speaking, or sudden vision changes.
