What is Pravastatin Sodium used for?

Pravastatin is a medication used to treat hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol). Pravastatin belongs to a class of drugs called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (or “statins”). Pravastatin can also be referred to as a lipid lowering medication which means it lowers cholesterol. Pravastatin is a generic medication also available under the brand names Pravachol and Selektine. The FDA approved pravastatin for generic use in 2006. Pravastatin is a very common drug used in the treatment of high cholesterol.

How to take Pravastatin Sodium

  • Take your medicine as directed. Your dose may need to be changed several times to find what works best for you.

  • Take this medicine in the evening or at bedtime, unless your doctor tells you differently.

  • Missed dose: Take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for a missed dose.

  • Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light.

  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, epilepsy, muscle pain or weakness, or thyroid problems. Tell your doctor if you usually have more than 2 drinks of alcohol per day.

  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using this medicine several days before you have surgery or medical tests.

  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

  • Keep all medicine out of the reach of children. Never share your medicine with anyone.

Pravastatin Sodium interactions

  • Some foods and medicines can affect how pravastatin works. Tell your doctor if you are using azithromycin, boceprevir, cimetidine, clarithromycin, colchicine, cyclosporine, erythromycin, itraconazole, ketoconazole, niacin (vitamin B3), or spironolactone.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicine to lower your cholesterol level, including cholestyramine, colestipol, gemfibrozil, or fenofibrate. You may need to take the medicine 1 hour before or 4 hours after you take pravastatin.

  • Tell any doctor or dentist who treats you that you are using this medicine. You may need to stop using this medicine several days before you have surgery or medical tests.

  • Your doctor will do lab tests at regular visits to check on the effects of this medicine. Keep all appointments.

  • Unusual tiredness

  • Muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness

  • Allergic reaction: Itching or hives, swelling in your face or hands, swelling or tingling in your mouth or throat, chest tightness, trouble breathing

  • Dark urine or pale stools, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in your upper stomach, yellow skin or eyes

  • Blistering, peeling, red skin rash
