What is Mitotane?

Mitotane is a prescription medication used to treat cancer of the adrenal gland that cannot be treated by surgery. This medication works by slowing the growth of adrenal gland cells and also decreases the amount of hormones produced by the adrenal gland.

Mitotane is administered as a 500 mg oral tablet. Your healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment. Do not take more of this medication or use it more frequently than recommended by your healthcare provider. 

Tell your doctor about any medical conditions you may have and other medications you may be taking before starting treatment with Mitotane. You should also tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant before taking this medication. 

What are the side effects of Mitotane?

Mitotane may cause unwanted side effects, such as dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, headache, confusion, and weakness. Other side effects may include breast tissue growth in men (gynecomastia), low white blood cell counts, liver problems, underactive thyroid, and increased cholesterol or triglyceride levels. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you experience any side effects or if side effects persist or worsen.
