What is Metronidazole?

Metronidazole is a generic prescription medication approved by the FDA to treat various bacterial and protozoal infections of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, heart, vagina, joints, brain, respiratory tract, and skin. Topical Metronidazole is used to treat rosacea of the skin (a type of skin condition similar to acne). 

Metronidazole is classified as a nitroimidazole antimicrobial drug. It targets most anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoal parasites. It has good absorption and penetration into the body’s tissues and can be used to treat infections in deeper parts of the body. Once absorbed, Metronidazole enters susceptible organisms and becomes activated, disrupting DNA synthesis and causing the death of the microbe. Metronidazole is only effective against certain protozoal and bacterial infections; it does not treat fungal or viral infections.
