Flagyl is a brand-name drug that is manufactured by Pfizer Inc. Metronidazole is an FDA-approved generic Flagyl.
Flagyl is an antibiotic medication that combats certain bacterial and parasitic infections. Flagyl is used to treat only vaginal infections, respiratory tract, stomach, liver, skin, joints, brain infections. It will not work for viral infections such as the common cold or flu. This prescription drug works by stopping the growth of certain bacteria and parasites. Flagyl is available in the form of an oral suspension, tablets, intravenous solution, and capsules. Flagyl is usually given for up to ten consecutive days. It is not recommended to drink alcohol or consume food or medicines that contain propylene glycol while taking Flagyl. Do not take Flagyl in larger or smaller doses or for longer than recommended. Use Flagyl only as directed by a doctor. It is not recommended to take Flagyl if you are allergic to metronidazole, or if you have taken disulfiram (Antabuse) during the past two weeks. Tell your doctor if you have ever had liver or kidney disease, stomach or intestinal disease, Cockayne syndrome (a rare genetic disorder), any blood cell disorder such as anemia, nerve disorder, or fungal infection, as Flagyl may not be right for you.
Some side effects of Flagyl are seizures, nausea, vomiting, back pain, irritability, weakness in the arms, hands, legs, or feet, mood or mental changes, unsteadiness or awkwardness, lack of coordination, unusual tiredness, or weakness, diarrhea, fainting, feeling of warmth, itching, and joint or muscle pain. Flagyl may cause your urine to turn darker in color. However, this effect is harmless and will disappear when the medication is stopped. Flagyl must not be taken in the presence of alcohol as the interaction can cause severe stomach pain and persistent vomiting.
