Nebupent is a brand-name prescription drug used to prevent pneumocystis pneumonia in HIV/AIDS patients. The active ingredient in Nebupent, pentamidine, belongs to a class of drugs called antiprotozoals. It is normally used to treat infections by single-celled parasites (protozoa), such as sleeping sickness, but it also effective against Pneumocystis jiroveci, the bacteria that causes pneumocystis pneumonia, or PJP.
Nebupent is prescribed to high-risk HIV/AIDS patients, either people who have already had one PJP infection or one whose immune system is seriously compromised by the HIV infection.
Nebupent is inhaled through a Respirgard II nebulizer. It may be administered by a healthcare professional at a clinic or hospital or administered at home after instruction by a healthcare professional. It will take 30 to 45 minutes to empty the Nebupent vial through a nebulizer. The dose is 300 mg inhaled once every four weeks.
Most people will experience side effects after taking Nebupent. The most commonly experienced side effects include fatigue, cough, fever, decreased appetite, shortness of breath, dizziness, wheezing, and infections.
Nebupent allergies are rare but could be severe. This includes anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction to Nebupent in which the blood pressure drops low enough to become a medical crisis. Consult a physician immediately if you show any signs of a Nebupent allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, or trouble breathing.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Ask your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
