What is Leqvio? 

Leqvio is an injectable prescription drug made by the pharmaceutical company Novartis. It is used along with diet (or diet with a statin medicine) to decrease LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) in people with an inherited condition called familial heterozygous hypercholesterolemia (HeFH). Leqvio can also be used along with diet and a statin to decrease LDL cholesterol in people with clinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). 

Leqvio is part of a class of drugs called proprotein convertase subtilisin kexin type 9 (PCSK9)-interfering mRNA. It works by decreasing LDL cholesterol in the blood, which reduces the amount of cholesterol that builds up on the walls of the arteries (which can block blood flow to the heart, brain, and other parts of the body).

This medication is administered by a healthcare professional in a healthcare setting under the skin of the stomach, upper arm, or thigh. It is administered once then again in three months, then every six months after that.

What are the side effects of Leqvio?

Common side effects of Leqvio include:

  • Injection site reactions such as pain, redness, and rash

  • Joint pain

  • Bronchitis

Serious reactions have not been reported. If you have signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help right away. Other side effects may occur. Talk to your healthcare provider for additional information about side effects. 

Does Leqvio cause weight gain?

Weight gain has not been reported as a side effect of Leqvio. 

Are there any known interactions or contraindications with Leqvio? 

Leqvio is not expected to cause any drug interactions. You should not take Leqvio if you are allergic to inclisiran or any ingredient in the medication. 

Does Leqvio replace the use of statins? 

No, Leqvio does not replace the use of a statin. It is generally used along with dietary changes alone or dietary changes plus a statin. 

Which is better, Leqvio or Lipitor? 

Leqvio is generally prescribed along with a statin drug such as Lipitor (atorvastatin). Consult your healthcare provider about appropriate treatment for your condition.
