What is Havrix?
Havrix is an intramuscular vaccine used to prevent hepatitis A. Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe illness. The hepatitis A virus (HAV) is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food and water or through direct contact with an infectious person. Hepatitis causes inflammation of the liver, vomiting, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). Hepatitis can lead to liver cancer, cirrhosis, or death.
Havrix is made from whole, killed hepatitis A virus but it does not contain live viruses, so you will not get hepatitis from the vaccine. This vaccine works by introducing a small, weakened amount of the virus to your body. This causes the immune system to develop antibodies that give you immunity to the disease. It should be noted that Hepatitis A vaccine does not protect you from other virus infections such as the HIV virus, which causes AIDS; hepatitis B, C, E or HPV virus.
If you have ever had an allergic reaction to any vaccine containing hepatitis A, or if you are allergic to neomycin then Havrix should not be administered to you. Havrix is highly recommended for all adults who travel in certain areas of the world where hepatitis A is a common disease. Before taking this prescription drug, tell your doctor if you have a weakened immune system caused by an illness or use of a particular medicine.
What are the side effects of Havrix?

If you find that you are feeling extreme drowsiness, fainting; or that you have a high fever (within a few hours or a few days after the vaccine) then you should consult your doctor immediately.
