What is Rabavert?
Rabavert is a brand-name rabies vaccine administered as an injection by a healthcare provider. The active ingredients are inactivated rabies virus particles, which have been destroyed but retain enough of their structure to provoke an immune response without causing infection. The inactive virus stimulates the production of antibodies, making the body able to defend against later rabies infections when they first occur.
Rabavert is injected in four doses over a month by a healthcare professional to patients who are at risk of being exposed to rabies. Rabavert is intended to provide long-lasting pre-exposure immunity to rabies, but may be used with another rabies vaccine to treat post-exposure rabies.
What are the side effects of Rabavert?
Although not a complete list, common side effects of Rabavert include, but are not limited to, fever, headache, flu symptoms, dizziness, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, and “feeling tired.” Site reactions to the injection are common and include redness, pain, and a lump at the needle site. Injection site reactions will go away after one or two days. Allergic reactions are very rare and include rash, itching, and swelling at the injection site.
