What is Ixiaro?
Ixiaro (Japanese encephalitis virus vaccine) is a viral vaccine used to fight against Japanese encephalitis in adults and adolescents who are at least 17 years old. Encephalitis is spread by mosquitoes and infects the membrane around the brain and spinal cord. This infection often causes only mild symptoms, but over time, swelling of the brain can lead to permanent brain damage or death. This vaccine works by exposing the body to a small, weakened dose of the virus, which causes the immune system to produce antibodies and develop immunity to the disease. However, the vaccine will not treat an active infection that has already developed in the body.
If you have a bleeding or blood clotting disorder or a weak immune system due to a medical condition or by taking certain medicines this vaccine may not be safe for you. In the case of a severe illness that causes fever or any type of infection, you should postpone your vaccination appointment until you get better.
In addition to receiving the Ixiaro vaccine, be sure to utilize protective clothing, insect repellents, and mosquito nets to prevent mosquito bites that could infect you with the Japanese encephalitis virus.
