What is Benzoin?
Benzoin is a botanical resin derived from one of two species of Styrax tree found in Southeast Asia and Indonesia. It has been used as a natural remedy in various cultures but is more commonly found in incense, fragrances, and as a flavoring in foods. It has an aroma very much like vanilla, but is considerably less difficult to grow and harvest and is therefore much less expensive.
Benzoin has been used topically in traditional medicine to treat shingles, ringworm, foot sores, and sore throats. Benzoin may have antiseptic properties and so has been used to treat minor cuts and wounds. It is commonly used as an inhalant, usually by boiling it in water, to loosen phlegm, treat laryngitis, or relieve croup in children. Dentists may use Benzoin as a protectant in patients with mouth sores or gum problems. Finally, Benzoin is widely used in commercial skin-care products as an astringent, a substance that tightens skin.
What are the side effects of Benzoin?
Common side effects of the topical administration of Benzoin include redness, irritation, and burning, but these effects are temporary. Allergic reactions are common. This is not a complete list of possible side effects.
