What is Symproic?

Symproic is an FDA-approved prescription medicine that is used for the treatment of opioid-induced constipation (OIC). This medicine belongs to a class of drugs called opioid antagonists. Symproic is usually prescribed to treat constipation in adults taking opioids for long-term chronic pain that is not caused by cancer. Symproic has not been approved for use in persons younger than 18 years old. Symproic may be habit-forming so you should not share your medication with anyone.

You should not use Symproic if you are allergic to any of its active ingredients (naldemedine tosylate), have a stomach or intestinal disorder, a stomach ulcer, or have liver disease.

Before using Symproic you should tell your healthcare providers about all your medical conditions and medications you are using, including herbal supplements, over-the-counter treatments, and vitamins. Providing this list of medications will help to avoid drug interactions or adverse effects associated with Symproic. If you are pregnant or become pregnant while using this medication your baby could have opioid withdrawal symptoms. You should not breastfeed while using Symproic as it can cause opioid withdrawal symptoms in your nursing baby.

Symproic should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not use this medication in larger or smaller doses or for longer than your doctor says. This medication may not work well in patients who have been using opioids for pain management for less than four weeks.

What are the side effects of Symproic?

Some of the possible side effects of Symproic include stomach pain, nausea and vomiting, and diarrhea. You should get immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects of Symproic including severe abdominal pain that worsens or does not go away. Persistent, worsening, or severe abdominal pain can be an indication of a tear or perforation in your stomach or intestinal wall.

You could also experience opioid withdrawal when using Symproic. Symptoms of withdrawal include sweating, chills, sneezing, and fever.
