Relistor is a prescription drug that reduces constipation that is caused by using narcotic medicine (opioids) for four weeks or longer. Methylnaltrexone, the main ingredient in Relistor , works by preventing constipation without reducing the pain-relieving effects of the narcotic. Relistor is also administered to adults who use narcotic medicine to treat severe chronic pain that is not caused by cancer. If you stop taking the opioid medication that is causing constipation, you can also stop taking Relistor . Relistor is usually used after laxatives have been tried without success.
Relistor is available in two primary forms; tablets and injections. The injection form of this drug can be used in adults who have advanced illness or pain caused by cancer and are receiving palliative care.
If you have a bowel blockage or a history of bowel blockage, then you should not use this drug. Tell your healthcare provider if you have kidney or liver problems.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant, as this drug can cause opioid withdrawal symptoms in your unborn baby or in a baby who is breastfed.
Also, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
Common side effects associated with the use of Relistor may include diarrhea, increased sweating, bloating, dizziness, gas. If you have severe diarrhea, stop taking Relistor and consult your healthcare provider immediately.
Serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare, however, you should be aware of possible signs of an allergic reaction. These may include rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, and/or trouble breathing. If any of these symptoms occur, seek emergency medical treatment.
