What is the brand name of Acyclovir?

Acyclovir is a generic prescription medicine, made by various pharmaceutical companies. Zovirax is the brand-name version of Acyclovir.

What is Acyclovir?

Acyclovir is an FDA-approved generic antiviral medication that slows the growth and spread of the herpes virus. Acyclovir will not cure the herpes virus, but it will lessen the effects of the virus. Chickenpox, shingles, genital herpes, cold sores, and cytomegalovirus are all caused by herpes viruses.

Avoid touching the affected area and touching other parts of your body or surfaces as the herpes virus is highly contagious. Drink lots of water while using this medication to ensure your kidneys keep working well.

You should let your healthcare provider know about other medical conditions you may have including if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. You should also provide a list of medications you are using including over-the-counter medications and herbal supplements.

What doses of Acyclovir are available?

Acyclovir is available in various forms including oral tablets (400 mg and 800 mg), capsules (200 mg), and suspension, as well as topically applied ointment and cream. You should only use Acyclovir as prescribed by a healthcare professional. Your Acyclovir treatment should start as soon as you begin to feel the first symptoms of a herpes virus infection (such as lesions).

What are the side effects of Acyclovir?

Some of the common side effects of Acyclovir are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and a general ill feeling.

You should not use Acyclovir if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. If you have any warning signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), you should seek emergency medical attention.

You should also get immediate medical attention if you have serious side effects such as low blood cell counts (symptoms may include fever, chills, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding)—or signs of kidney problems. Signs of problems with your kidneys include painful urination, swollen ankles and feet, and shortness of breath.

This is not a full list of side effects, and others may occur. Consult your healthcare provider for more information about side effects.

Who cannot take Acyclovir?

Acyclovir is not safe for all individuals. You should not take Acyclovir if you are allergic to acyclovir or any ingredients in the medication.

Also, there are some medical conditions where the healthcare provider will weigh risks and benefits, and if the drug is prescribed, patients will be carefully monitored. Some examples include kidney, liver, or neurological conditions.

Before taking Acyclovir, tell your healthcare provider about your medical conditions, allergies to medications, and medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and vitamins and supplements.

What should I avoid while taking Acyclovir?

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease. Taking Acyclovir does not prevent you from passing genital herpes to a sexual partner. Genital herpes can also be contagious through viral shedding from the skin, even if you do not have symptoms. Avoid intercourse when lesions and/or symptoms are present. Also, avoid contact with lesions—do not let infected areas contact other people. Do not touch an infected area, then touch your eyes.

When using Acyclovir cream, avoid using it in other areas than where prescribed. Avoid using other topical products on the affected viral area. It’s also best to avoid rubbing the affected area because doing so could worsen or spread the infection.

Why do people take Acyclovir daily?

Sometimes Acyclovir is prescribed as a maintenance medication. This is for people who have frequent recurrences of herpes infection. Taking this antiviral medication every day reduces the chance of viral outbreaks. Studies show this type of treatment to be safe and effective.
