Bactrim is a brand-name prescription drug manufactured by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. The generic version of Bactrim is sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
Bactrim is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections such as ear, urine, skin, and respiratory infections. This medication is a combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. These two antibiotics work together to disrupt and eliminate bacteria cells in the body that cause infections. This medication may also be used to prevent certain types of pneumonia.
Bactrim tablets can usually be taken with or without food. If this medication causes you to develop an upset stomach, then you should take it after a meal. Drink plenty of fluids when using this medication to lower the risk of kidney stones forming.
Your healthcare provider will recommend an appropriate dosage for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
Continue using this medication until the full prescribed amount is completed, even if your symptoms go away after a few days. Stopping the use of this medication too early may allow bacteria to regrow which can result in a relapse of your infection. Refer to the Bactrim medication guide in the event of a missed dose.
Common side effects that may result from the use of Bactrim include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and a loss of appetite. Consult with your physician or pharmacist if you have questions or experience any of these effects.
Many patients using this medication do not have any serious side effects. Serious side effects such as muscle weakness, mood changes, signs of kidney problems, extreme drowsiness, signs of low blood sugar, or a fast heartbeat may require medical attention.
In rare cases, Bactrim has been associated with dangerous blood disorders and skin reactions. Check with your doctor for professional medical advice on the risks and benefits involved with using Bactrim as this is not a complete list of side effects.
