What is Vagifem?

Vagifem is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat vaginal atrophy, or atrophic vaginitis, in postmenopausal women. Women going through menopause naturally begin to produce less estrogen, which can lead to symptoms of vaginal atrophy, such as thinning, inflammation, and dryness in the vagina. This medication contains estradiol, a form of estrogen, that helps replenish estrogen levels in the body.

Vagifem is available in the form of a tablet that is inserted into the vagina using an applicator. Vagifem 10 mcg tablets are usually inserted daily for the first 2 weeks and then inserted twice weekly thereafter. Your doctor will generally prioritize medications that can be applied directly inside the vagina when treating symptoms of menopause. This is because estrogens taken by mouth, injected, or absorbed through the skin may have a greater risk of side effects due to more estrogen being absorbed into the body.
