Femring is a brand-name prescription drug. There is currently no generic version of Femring.
Femring is a prescription medication female hormone device used by women to help reduce symptoms of menopause such as vaginal dryness and hot flashes. These symptoms are usually caused by a shortage of estrogen. Femring works by reintroducing this hormone back into the body. If this medication is being used to treat symptoms only in and around the vagina, then consideration may first need to be given to other products that can be applied directly inside the vagina such as creams and vaginal tablets.
Femring comes in the form of a soft, flexible vaginal ring. This ring is inserted into the vagina. It can be placed by the patient or the healthcare professional by squeezing the ring from opposite sides until it is compressed. It is then inserted in the upper one-third portion of the vagina. It will release estrogen over a period of three months. It should then be removed and replaced with a new ring if your condition requires it. This product should not be kept in your body for longer than three months. When placed appropriately, it should not be felt nor should it interfere with sexual intercourse. Your doctor will recommend the most appropriate dose based on your medical condition and your body's response to the treatment.
If your Femring vaginal ring falls out, rinse it in lukewarm water and put it back into the vagina. You should contact your doctor if the ring falls out often. The ring can be removed by hooking your finger through it and gently pulling it out. Let your doctor know if you have any trouble removing it.
Common side effects involved with using Femring may include bloating, nausea, vomiting, headaches, or breast tenderness among other side effects. These effects usually occur when you first start this medication and generally subside as your body adjusts. Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you notice that these side effects persist or worsen.
In rare cases, Femring may cause serious blood clot issues such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, or heart attacks. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any serious side effects such as unusual sweating, severe headaches, confusion, slurred speech, trouble breathing, or coughing up blood.
