Androderm is a testosterone patch that is applied to the skin. It can be used to treat low testosterone levels. Low testosterone levels can be due to a number of conditions. It is also sometimes used off-label (for a use that is not FDA-approved) for transgender hormone therapy.
Androderm can be used in adult males, but should not be used in males less than 18 years old.
This type of testosterone is not used to enhance athletic performance.
Androderm is applied to the skin at bedtime. Your doctor will order blood work periodically while you take Androderm.
Women and children should not come into contact with this medication, because it can be absorbed through the skin. Testosterone can harm an unborn baby, so pregnant individuals should also avoid contact with this medicine as well as the man’s skin where the medicine has been applied.
Use this medication exactly as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not use more than prescribed, and do not share your medication with anyone. Misuse of testosterone can cause dangerous effects.
Common side effects of Androderm include application site reactions and back pain. Other common side effects include, but are not limited to, headache, depression, swelling, diarrhea, fatigue, acne, and change in libido.
Serious allergic reactions are rare, but if you have symptoms of an allergic reaction like hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.
Other serious adverse effects may occur as this is not a full list. Consult your healthcare professional for more information about Androderm side effects.
Before you take Androderm, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions and medical history. You should not take Androderm if you are allergic to testosterone or any ingredients in the product. Others who should not take Androderm include:
Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding
People with breast cancer
People with prostate cancer
People with unstable coronary artery disease
People with polycythemia
There are other conditions where the risks and benefits must be considered to decide if Androderm is appropriate, such as people with certain heart problems or kidney or liver conditions. Talk to your healthcare provider if you want to know if Androderm is right for you.
Before you take Androderm, tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and vitamins or supplements. Some drug interactions include:
Insulin: Androgens like testosterone can affect blood sugar levels, so people with diabetes who use insulin may need additional monitoring and dosage adjustments.
Blood thinners like Coumadin (warfarin): Patients who take blood thinners may need more frequent monitoring.
Steroids: People who take corticosteroids such as prednisone in combination with testosterone may have increased fluid retention. These patients will need close monitoring, especially if they also have heart, kidney, or liver conditions.
This is not a full list of drug interactions. Talk to your physician about drug interactions and how they may affect you.
Carefully read all of the patient information that comes with your prescription and ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any questions about how to apply Androderm. Androderm patches are generally prescribed to be applied at bedtime. Apply Androderm at around the same time each night. Make sure the application area is clean, dry, and intact. Avoid areas that are oily or hairy or where you sweat frequently. You can apply Androderm to the back, stomach, upper arms, or thighs. Do not apply Androderm anywhere else other than these sites.
Remove the old patch before you apply a new one. Change your application site daily, and allow at least seven days before using the same site.
After applying your patch or patches, do not shower, bathe, or swim for at least 3 hours.
Androderm contains aluminum. If you have an MRI, you must remove your patch before the procedure to avoid burns.
You may start to see an improvement in symptoms within 3 or 4 weeks. It may take several months to see the full benefits of Androderm.
