Danazol is a generic prescription drug used to treat endometriosis and prevent episodes of hereditary angioedema, a condition in which the body periodically swells up.
Endometriosis is a condition where the inner lining of the uterus, the endometrium, grows on the outside of the uterus. This growth is stimulated by the female hormone estrogen.
Danazol is very similar to the male hormone testosterone. It both decreases the body's production of estrogen and blocks estrogen from attaching to cells in the body, such as the breast or uterus, and thus decreases the effect of estrogen on various tissues. This stops the growth rate of endometrial tissues on the uterus.
Hereditary angioedema is a complex disease in which the body produces too much bradykinin, a substance that causes blood vessels to dilate. When this happens, the body swells up all over, including organs, face, limbs, and lungs. Danazol helps restore normal levels of the protein that prevents the production of bradykinin.
Danazol is prescribed off-label—that is, a use not approved by the FDA—to treat fibrocystic breast disease, heavy menstruation, premenstrual syndrome, and breast pain. For all these uses, Danazol treats the disease by either reducing estrogen production or blocking the effects of estrogen.
