Bactrim Ds is a brand-name drug. The generic version of Bactrim Ds is sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim.
Bactrim Ds contains a combination of two drugs: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. It is FDA-approved to treat a variety of infections, including acute otitis media (ear infection), traveler’s diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and pneumocystis pneumonia. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria. Bactrim Ds does not treat infections caused by viruses or fungi.
Bactrim Ds is taken by mouth with or without food. It is recommended to take this medication with food if you experience stomach upset after taking it. Bactrim Ds should be taken consistently at the same time every day for maximum effect. Continue taking Bactrim Ds according to your prescription even if you start feeling better before you’ve completed the treatment course. Stopping this medication early could contribute to antibiotic resistance and allow the infection to return.
Bactrim Ds is not recommended in children under the age of 2 months due to an increased risk of adverse effects.
The most common side effects of Bactrim Ds are nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, rash, and itching. Other side effects may include fatigue, insomnia, ringing in the ears, joint pain, and diarrhea. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience side effects while using Bactrim Ds.
Serious side effects are possible with Bactrim Ds, and they include serious skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), lung damage, and aplastic anemia, among other adverse effects. Some people may also experience a hypersensitivity reaction to Bactrim Ds. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction with signs and symptoms such as severe rash, swelling of the face or throat, and trouble breathing.
Consult a healthcare professional for other possible side effects, drug interactions, warnings, precautions, drug information, and medical advice before taking Bactrim Ds. This is not a complete list of side effects.
