Ambisome is an FDA-approved prescription medication used to treat fungal infections. It is usually used in patients who cannot tolerate or who do not respond to regular amphotericin treatment. This medication works by damaging the fungal cell membrane and stopping the growth of fungi.
This medication is available in the form of an intravenous powder for injection. It is usually given by infusion into a vein (IV), once daily. This injection is usually injected slowly over two hours. Your doctor will recommend an appropriate dose for you based on an assessment of your current medical condition, other drugs you are currently taking, and your response to treatment.
If you are using this medication at home by yourself, ensure that you learn all preparation and usage instructions from your healthcare professional. Check this product visually for particles or discoloration before use. If either is present, do not use the medication. It may be necessary to continue using this medication for several weeks in order to treat certain fungal infections. Stopping the use of this medication too early may result in a return of the infection.
Common side effects resulting from the use of Ambisome include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, back pain, chills, chest pain, fast heart rate, headache, trouble sleeping, and sweating. In some cases, your doctor may prescribe other medications such as acetaminophen, diphenhydramine, or hydrocortisone to prevent or relieve side effects related to the infusion. If side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away.
Tell your doctor immediately if you begin to experience serious side effects such as unusual tiredness or weakness, severe stomach pain, or signs of kidney problems, such as decreased urination or blood in the urine, or signs of liver problems, such as yellowing eyes or skin.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions.
