What is Abelcet?

Abelcet is a brand-name prescription injection that fights invasive fungal infections. The active ingredient, amphotericin B lipid complex, is a special formulation of the antifungal drug, amphotericin B. It is prescribed to patients who either are not succeeding with amphotericin B or who are unable to tolerate the side effects.

Amphotericin B kills fungus by opening up a channel in their cell walls through which the cell's contents spill out, killing the fungus.

Abelcet is given once as a 2 hour intravenous infusion.

What are the side effects of Abelcet?

Abelcet side effects are commonly experienced. Patients will be closely monitored during and after their injection. About one in five patients will experience chills and about one in seven will experience a fever. Around one in ten will have multiple organ failure or respiratory failure – both are medical emergencies that may be fatal.

The most common side effects of Abelcet are temporary site reactions to the infusion. These include pain, irritation, redness, and soreness. Other common side effects of Abelcet include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, low blood pressure, high blood pressure, cardiac arrest (in six percent of patients), high blood potassium, pain, anemia, and gastrointestinal bleeding. These side effects typically start within one to two hours after receiving the injection.

Abelcet allergies are very rare. Consult a physician immediately if you show any signs of a Abelcet allergic reaction, such as itching, rash, facial swelling, dizziness, or trouble breathing.
