Alrex (loteprednol ophthalmic) is a prescription drug used to temporarily relieve symptoms of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva, or the mucous lining of the eyelids). It may also be used to treat redness, inflammation, and itching from cyclitis (inflammation of the middle portion of your eye), iritis (inflammation of your iris), or other conditions as prescribed by your primary healthcare provider. However, Alrex is not recommended to be used for the treatment of an eye infection.
The Alrex ophthalmic suspension works by stopping certain chemicals from producing an inflammatory response in your body. This prescription drug should only be used for a short period of time. Seek medical advice from your primary healthcare provider if your symptoms do not improve after two days.
Alrex is indicated for use by adults and is not recommended for anyone below the age of 18 years old. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children and pets.
You should read all medication guidelines and instructions before taking this medication. You should not use Alrex while wearing your contact lenses as it may contain a preservative that can cause permanent discoloration of your contact lenses. To reduce the chances of contamination, do not touch the dropper tip to your eyelids or any surrounding surfaces. Keep the bottle closed when not in use.
Common side effects linked to Alrex use are as follows:
Minor burning in the eyes
Eye pain
Blurred vision
Dry eyes
Watery eyes
A sensation or feeling of something foreign in the eye
Itching in the eyes
Light sensitivity
Other side effects of Alrex may include headache, runny nose, and sore throat.
Ask a healthcare professional for other possible side effects. If you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as severe rash, swelling, or trouble breathing, after using Alrex, get immediate medical attention.
Let your primary healthcare provider know if you have ever had glaucoma, cataracts, or cataract surgery. You also should seek medical advice from your doctor about whether Alrex is safe to use while pregnant or breastfeeding.
