What is Zafirlukast?
Zafirlukast is a generic prescription drug used to prevent asthma attacks in adults and children 5 years and older. Zafirlukast is often used along with other medications, such as a long-acting bronchodilator and an inhaled steroid. Zafirlukast should not be taken to relieve an active asthma attack. A fast-acting, or “rescue” inhaler should be used in an acute attack. If you feel like your medications are not working, or if your breathing problems are worsening, get medical attention right away. Zafirlukast blocks leukotrienes, substances that cause inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult to breathe.
Zafirlukast is administered as an oral tablet on an empty stomach (at least one hour before or 2 hours after a meal).
Zafirlukast is not safe for everyone. People who are allergic to Zafirlukast or who have liver problems should not take Zafirlukast. Women who are breastfeeding should not take Zafirlukast. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should consult their doctor.
