What is Singulair?

Singulair is an FDA-approved prescription medication that is a leukotriene antagonist used to treat asthma and allergies. Leukotrienes are chemicals produced by your body when you inhale allergens, like pollen.

Singulair is not a rescue medication. Singulair should be taken once daily at night to prevent allergy and asthma symptoms. It won't work fast enough to treat an asthma attack. You should use your rescue inhaler as directed for an asthma attack.

Singulair can be used to treat asthma in children as young as 12 months old. It is also used to treat year-round allergies in children as young as six months old.

Singulair comes in oral granules, chewable tablets, and tablet form. When taking the tablet, swallow it  whole with a glass of water. The chewable tablet must be chewed thoroughly before swallowing. Do not give Singulair to a child without a doctor's prescription.

What are the side effects of Singulair?

The most common side effects patients experience while taking Singulair include cold symptoms such as stuffy or runny nose or cough, fever, headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, and ear infection. Singulair may cause bedwetting in children. This is not a complete list of side effects and it is possible others will occur. You can talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist to get the best medical advice before taking Singulair.

Singulair comes with a black box warning, which is the most serious warning required by the FDA. Singulair can cause serious neuropsychiatric events, including agitation, aggression, depression, sleep disturbances, and suicidal thoughts and/or behavior. Talk to your healthcare provider about the risks vs benefits of taking Singulair. If you take Singulair, you and your loved ones/caregivers should be alert to behavior changes. If changes occur, stop taking Singulair and contact your healthcare provider immediately.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience  severe sinus pain pain, rash, muscle weakness, numbness or tingling in the arms and legs, ear pain, severe skin reaction or fever.

If you have signs of an allergic reaction such as rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, seek emergency medical treatment right away.

Tell your doctor if your asthma symptoms like wheezing, or if allergy symptoms continue while taking Singulair.
