What is Temozolomide?

Temozolomide is a generic prescription drug used as both first-line and maintenance therapy for certain types of brain cancers (glioblastoma; and astrocytoma that does not respond to other drugs). Temozolomide is started after tumors have been removed and, in astrocytoma, after treatment with nitrosourea and procarbazine has failed. As first-line chemotherapy, Temozolomide is usually used with radiation therapy. The purpose of the therapy is to eliminate cancer cells that still remain after surgery.

A “maintenance therapy” is a drug therapy that follows the treatments when the patient is in remission (showing no signs of cancer). The primary purpose of maintenance therapy is to prevent a relapse of cancer.

Temozolomide causes cancer cell death by breaking the DNA strands in the cell, making the cell unable to function.

Temozolomide may be taken as a capsule or injection, depending on what your healthcare provider determines.

What are the side effects of Temozolomide?

The most common side effects of Temozolomide include  nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and hair loss. Other common side effects include diarrhea, mouth sores, weakness, dizziness, blurred vision, coughing, headache, bruising, bleeding, and insomnia.

Severe side effects include liver problems and low white blood cell counts, which can put the patient at risk for infection.

Mental and mood changes may include confusion and memory problems, but these are very rare.

Allergic reactions are rare. Watch for important signs of an allergic reaction, such as fever, sore throat, difficulty breathing, swelling, itching, or rash, and seek medical treatment right away if you have any of these symptoms. Seek medical advice from a healthcare professional if you have additional questions.
