Rayaldee is a brand-name prescription drug that treats overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism) in patients who have stage 3 or 4 kidney failure and low vitamin D levels. The tiny parathyroid glands in the neck produce hormones that regulate the body's use of calcium. In excess, these hormones leach calcium out of the bones and put that calcium into the bloodstream. So patients with overactive parathyroid glands suffer from bone loss, bone weakness, fractures, muscle pain, bone pain, and calcium buildup in joints and soft tissues.
The active ingredient in Rayaldee, calcifediol, is a form of vitamin D3. Calcifediol helps the body use excess calcium in the bloodstream and tissues and also reduces the parathyroid production of hormones.
Rayaldee is taken once daily at bedtime. The dosage will be determined by the doctor. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and resume taking Rayaldee at bedtime the next day. Do not double up on doses. Before taking Rayaldee, inform your doctor of any medical conditions you have, as well as all of the medications you take (including Rx, OTC, vitamins, and supplements). People with stage 5 kidney disease or end-stage kidney disease on dialysis should not take Rayaldee.
The most common side effects of Rayaldee (some of which can be severe) are shortness of breath, constipation, cough, heart failure, osteoarthritis, anemia, and high levels of calcium and potassium. Serious side effects include anemia (low red blood cells), high levels of potassium, calcium, or phosphate in the blood, bronchitis, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, which is either chronic bronchitis or emphysema), and congestive heart failure. Call your doctor right away or get emergency medical attention if you have shortness of breath, swelling, rapid weight gain, confusion, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, increased thirst/urination, pale skin, lightheadedness, or cold hands and feet.
Rayaldee is similar to vitamin D3, so allergic reactions are rare. Other side effects may occur. Talk with your doctor about what side effects to expect and how to address them.
Consult your healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects and drug interactions.
