Zemplar is a brand-name prescription drug. The active ingredient in Zemplar, paricalcitol, is available as a generic injection or liquid gel capsule from manufacturers such as Teva, Amneal, and Aurobindo, among others.
Zemplar is a brand-name prescription drug that treats overactive parathyroid glands (hyperparathyroidism) due to chronic kidney disease. The parathyroid glands produce hormones that regulate the body's use of calcium. When there are high levels of parathyroid hormones in the body, calcium is absorbed out of the bones and into the bloodstream. Patients with overactive parathyroid glands may experience bone loss, bone weakness, fractures, bone pain, muscle pain, and joint pain.
The active ingredient in Zemplar, paricalcitol, is a form of vitamin D2. Paricalcitol reduces the production of parathyroid hormone by the parathyroid, which may also help the body use excess calcium in the bloodstream.
Zemplar is approved for use in adults and children aged 10 years and older with secondary hyperparathyroidism caused by Stage 3 or Stage 4 chronic kidney disease. It can also treat secondary hyperparathyroidism caused by Stage 5 chronic kidney disease.
Zemplar is administered as an injection or liquid gel capsule.
The most common side effects of Zemplar are nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and diarrhea. Zemplar can also cause high blood pressure and symptoms of a cold, such as a sore throat or cough. Other side effects of Zemplar include back pain, chest pain, constipation, dehydration, and itching. Consult your healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while taking Zemplar.
The use of Zemplar may increase the risk of high calcium levels in the blood. Your doctor may need to monitor your levels of calcium, phosphorous, and parathyroid hormone levels before and during treatment.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can report negative side effects to the FDA.
