The parathyroid glands produce hormones that regulate the body's use of calcium. When there are high levels of parathyroid hormones in the body, calcium is absorbed out of the bones and into the bloodstream. Patients with overactive parathyroid glands may experience bone loss, bone weakness, fractures, bone pain, muscle pain, and joint pain.
