Propylthiouracil is a generic prescription drug. There is no brand-name version available at this time.
Propylthiouracil is a brand-name prescription drug that treats an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism). Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces too much of the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which the thyroid makes from thyroxine. These two hormones are vital to all the body's functions, including the body's use of energy. Symptoms of hyperthyroidism include goiter (a swelling of the thyroid), insomnia, fatigue, appetite change, weight loss, rapid heartbeat, and irritability.
The active ingredient in Propylthiouracil, methimazole, interferes with the chemical production of thyroxine in the thyroid, and so reduces thyroid's production of both T3 and T4 hormones. Propylthiouracil is taken 3 times daily as a tablet. Dosages will vary until the underlying condition is stabilized. Because of the potentially serious side effects, Propylthiouracil is only meant to be taken for a short period of time until other therapies, such as surgery or radioactive iodine therapy, have effectively treated the underlying condition.
While not a complete list, the most common side effects of Propylthiouracil are stomach upset, nausea, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, vertigo, loss of taste, muscle pain, joint pain, and swelling. The most serious side effect of Propylthiouracil is liver damage which can result in liver failure and death. Symptoms of liver damage are yellow skin and eyes (jaundice), dark urine, loss of appetite, fever, nausea, vomiting, and upper stomach pain. There may be some hair loss when Propylthiouracil is first taken. Allergic reactions are rare but could be severe, such as lupus, a condition in which the body's immune system attacks organs and tissues throughout the body, or severe skin reactions involving a body-wide rash, peeling, and blistering.
