Clonidine Hcl is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Controlled high blood pressure assists in preventing strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
Clonidine Hcl belongs to a class of drugs called centrally acting antiadrenergic agents. Drugs in this class inhibit the stimulation of the central nervous system alpha-adrenergic receptors and decrease sympathetic stimulation to the blood vessels and the heart. They block the release and action of catecholamines (epinephrine, norepinephrine, dopamine), which are released in response to stress. Centrally acting antiadrenergic agents make the heartbeat slower and with less force, and relax the blood vessels. All these actions lead to lowered blood pressure levels.
Before you take clonidine, let your healthcare provider know if you have heart disease or severe coronary artery disease, a heart rhythm disorder, slow heartbeats, low blood pressure, a history of heart attack or stroke, kidney disease, or if you have ever had an allergic reaction to a Catapres TTS transdermal skin patch.
It has not been determined whether this medicine will harm an unborn baby. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant while taking clonidine.
Common side effects of Clonidine Hcl include drowsiness, dizziness, feeling tired or irritable, dry mouth, loss of appetite, constipation, dry eyes, contact lens discomfort, or sleep problems (insomnia), nightmares.
Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction to clonidine. Signs include hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
There are other side effects that you can experience while using Clonidine Hcl. See medical advice from your healthcare professional about managing these side effects. You can also report additional side effects to the FDA.
