What is the brand name of Methyldopa?

Methyldopa is a generic blood pressure medication and is manufactured by Mylan, Teva, and IVAX. It is the active ingredient in the brand-name drug, Aldomet.

What is Methyldopa?

Methyldopa is a generic prescription drug that reduces blood pressure in patients with high blood pressure (hypertension).

Methyldopa lowers blood pressure by working directly on the part of the central nervous system responsible for maintaining muscle tone in the blood vessels, the sympathetic nervous system. Methyldopa interferes with signals in that part of the brain and decreases its activity. Among the effects are a relaxing of muscles, including the muscles in blood vessels, that the sympathetic nervous system controls.

Methyldopa is taken as a tablet every two days. The starting dose will be high—two to three tablets a day—but will stabilize at one dose every two days. Methyldopa effects on blood pressure occur 12 to 48 hours after taking a dose and last for about 48 hours.

What are the side effects of Methyldopa?

While medicines may have side effects, many people experience no side effects, or the side effects they experience are very minimal. The side effects of Methyldopa are minimal when compared to other blood pressure medications and are often temporary. The most common physical side effects of Methyldopa include drowsiness, headache, weakness, and low energy. The most severe, but very rare, side effects reported for Methyldopa include liver problems and low white blood cell counts, putting the patient at risk for infections.

Mental and mood changes are very rare and include nightmares and reversible mild psychosis (delusions and hallucinations).

Allergic reactions are rare but can include severe skin reactions, such as toxic epidermal necrolysis, a potentially life-threatening condition. Watch closely for signs of an allergic reaction such as fever, sore throat, facial swelling, or rash, and get emergency medical attention if you suspect you're having an allergic reaction to Methyldopa.

If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
