Temazepam is a generic drug manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies, including Sandoz, Mylan, and Amneal Pharmaceuticals. Temazepam is sold under the brand-name Restoril.
Temazepam is used for the short-term treatment of insomnia, a sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling or staying asleep. Temazepam belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. This drug works by increasing the activity of a chemical in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter (chemical messenger) that can help slow down activity in the brain, which can help improve sleep. When you take Temazepam, the effects of GABA are increased in the brain. This medication is available as a capsule taken by mouth at bedtime in doses of 7.5 milligrams (mg), 15 mg, 22.5 mg, and 30 mg. The healthcare provider will prescribe the lowest effective dose.
Temazepam is classified by the DEA as a Schedule IV drug. This means that it may be habit-forming. Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Follow all directions on your prescription label. Temazepam should not be used in larger amounts, or for longer than prescribed. Inform your doctor if the Temazepam seems to stop working as well in treating your symptoms. Misuse of this medication can cause addiction, overdose, or death. Keep this medication where others cannot get to it, and keep track of the number of pills, so you know if any are missing.
Be sure to alert your healthcare provider if you have asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), sleep apnea, or other breathing disorder; kidney or liver disease; a history of depression or suicidal thoughts or behavior; or a history of substance use disorder. Tell your doctor about all the medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, vitamins, and supplements.
Some of the common side effects of Temazepam include headache, drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness, nervousness, and nausea. Other side effects may include weakness, euphoria, upset stomach, diarrhea, and dry mouth. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience any of these side effects, or if side effects persist or worsen.
Temazepam is a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. It should not be taken with alcohol or other CNS depressants such as opioid pain medications, anxiety medicines, certain seizure medications, or other sleeping medications. Serious side effects could occur, including impairment, extreme sedation, trouble breathing, loss of consciousness, coma, and death.
There is also a risk of abuse, misuse, addiction, and dependence while using benzodiazepines. This medication should be taken exactly as prescribed. Serious side effects in people who have abused or misused this medicine may include suicidal thoughts or behaviors, seizures, delirium, and paranoia.
Some people using Temazepam have reported engaging in activities while asleep, such as driving, eating, walking, or having sexual intercourse. Consult your healthcare provider if this happens to you.
If you have symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.
Women taking Temazepam should tell their doctors if they wish to become pregnant or think they might be pregnant as there are potentially serious side effects to an unborn child.
This is not a complete list of side effects, and others may occur. Check with your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice about other possible side effects or drug interactions. You may report side effects to the FDA.
No. Avoid alcohol while taking this medication. Combining alcohol with Temazepam can lead to serious side effects, impairment, and respiratory depression, which can cause slowed and ineffective breathing, loss of consciousness, coma, or even death.
Temazepam is FDA-approved for the short-term treatment of insomnia, which generally means use of this medication for 7 to 10 days.
However, some people take Temazepam for longer periods of time, only if approved by a healthcare provider. Individuals who take Temazepam for a longer time will be closely monitored. Consult your healthcare provider for professional medical advice on how long you should take temazepam. If you take Temazepam for a longer time, when it is time to stop, your healthcare provider will instruct you on how to slowly and safely taper off the medication to reduce the chance of withdrawal symptoms.
