A SingleCare discount card will save you on Restoril and its generics at local pharmacies near you, such as CVS, Walmart, or Duane Reade.
Restoril is a medication used as a short-term treatment for insomnia. Insomnia should not be treated long-term by Restoril. Chronic insomnia may be due to an undiagnosed cause and treatment with Restoril will mask this cause.
Restoril belongs to a class of drugs called benzodiazepines, which have a sedating effect by enhancing a chemical that slows activity in the brain. The Dosage will depend on the nature and severity of the insomnia symptoms. Restoril is a controlled substance and has the potential for abuse and dependence. Misuse of this drug can cause addiction, overdose, and death. Store Restoril where no one else can get to it, making sure to keep it out of reach and out of sight of children and pets.
Before taking Restoril, tell your doctor about all of the medical conditions you have. Restoril is not appropriate for everyone. Tell your doctor about all of the medications you take, including Rx and OTC drugs, vitamins, and supplements. Restoril can slow or stop your breathing, especially when combined with certain drugs (such as opioid pain medicines or muscle relaxants) or with alcohol. Never drink alcohol while taking Restoril.
You may fall asleep very quickly after taking Restoril, so take the medication just before bed when you have at least 7 or 8 hours to sleep. You may feel tired and have impaired reaction time on the next day, so do not drive or operate machinery until you are fully awake and alert.
Restoril is a potent sedative and hypnotic (sleep-inducing) drug, so the most common side effects are sleepiness, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, vertigo, loss of coordination, and headache.
Restoril may cause complex sleep behaviors, such as sleepwalking, sleep sex, and sleep cooking and eating. The most hazardous of all is sleep-driving, which is getting out of bed while asleep and driving a vehicle. Patients typically do not remember these events. Restoril must be discontinued if you do any of these activities while taking Restoril.
Mental and mood changes may include depression, confusion, nervousness, and nightmares.
Allergic reactions to Restoril are uncommon and may include swelling, rash, or trouble breathing. These reactions require emergency medical attention.
As a controlled substance, Restoril has the potential for abuse and dependence and should only be used for short-term treatment of insomnia, under close supervision of the prescriber. Restoril is not intended for frequent or long-term use and generally should not be used for more than 10 days in a row.
Restoril does have withdrawal symptoms when discontinued suddenly: muscle cramps, seizures, fever, sweating, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and headaches. Get medical help right away if these symptoms occur. Withdrawal symptoms can last for many months. Restoril should be discontinued only under the supervision of a doctor.
This is not a complete list of side effects that may occur. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist about possible side effects before taking this medicine.
