Fentanyl Citrate is a strong prescription pain medicine used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain. Fentanyl Citrate is usually used when other pain treatments such as non-opioid pain medicines or immediate-release opioid medicines do not treat your pain well enough or you cannot tolerate them. Fentanyl Citrate belongs to the narcotic analgesics drug class. Narcotic analgesics work by binding to opioid receptors, part of the opioid system that controls pain, pleasurable and addictive behaviors. Opioid receptors are more abundant in the brain and spinal cord but are also located elsewhere in the body such as the stomach and the lungs. The main opioid receptor that narcotic analgesics bind to the mu receptor.
