Codeine Sulfate is a prescription medication used to treat mild to moderate pain. It comes in tablet form and as the main ingredient in prescription-grade cough suppressants. Tylenol 3, another popular pain reliever, is Codeine Sulfate combined with acetaminophen. Codeine Sulfate belongs to the narcotic analgesics drug class. Narcotic analgesics work by binding to opioid receptors, part of the opioid system that controls pain, pleasurable and addictive behaviors. Opioid receptors are more abundant in the brain and spinal cord but are also located elsewhere in the body such as the stomach and the lungs.
