Is there a generic of Wellbutrin Xl?

Bupropion extended-release is the FDA-approved, generic version of Wellbutrin Xl.

What is Wellbutrin Xl?

Wellbutrin Xl is a prescription drug that is taken to treat major depressive disorder (depression) or seasonal affective disorder. Wellbutrin Xl is available as an extended-release tablet. (There is also an immediate-release form of bupropion called Wellbutrin and a sustained-release form of bupropion called Wellbutrin SR.)

Major depressive disorder (also referred to as depression) causes patients to experience persistent sadness and a loss of interest.

Seasonal affective disorder can be triggered by seasonal changes. When there is reduced sunlight, your body can experience a decrease in serotonin and melatonin levels. Fall or winter conditions (less sunlight) can increase your risk of having seasonal depression since sunlight helps your brain to release serotonin.

The exact way Wellbutrin Xl works is not exactly known but is thought to be by balancing norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. For patients diagnosed with seasonal depression, Wellbutrin Xl is recommended to be taken in the autumn before symptoms develop. Wellbutrin Xl should be taken throughout winter, and slowly tapered in the spring. When you stop taking Wellbutrin Xl, whether for MDD or seasonal affective disorder, your healthcare provider will advise you on a tapering schedule. Wellbutrin Xl should never be stopped abruptly, because withdrawal symptoms could occur.

With any antidepressant, there may be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. If you experience any suicidal thoughts while taking Wellbutrin Xl, you should tell your healthcare provider immediately. Family members and caregivers should also be alert to any changes in your mood and behavior and get medical help if changes occur.

Because Wellbutrin Xl is extended-release, the tablet should be swallowed whole—do not chew or crush. Wellbutrin Xl is usually taken once daily, in the morning.

You should talk to your healthcare provider before using Wellbutrin Xl. Ask your healthcare provider for medical advice to learn if Wellbutrin Xl is right for you. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medications you take, including prescription drugs, OTC medicines, and vitamins or supplements, so he or she can make sure that Wellbutrin Xl is safe to take with your other medicines.

What are the side effects of Wellbutrin Xl?

Some common side effects of Wellbutrin Xl are headache, dry mouth, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, agitation, dizziness, weight loss, insomnia, abnormal dreams, and others.

Severe allergic reactions are rare, but if you experience any of the following symptoms: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat—you should seek emergency medical help at a nearby hospital.

Other side effects may occur, including serious side effects. Consult your healthcare provider for additional information, questions, and medical advice regarding adverse effects.

What is the average weight loss with Wellbutrin Xl?

Although Wellbutrin Xl alone is not FDA-approved for weight loss, the active ingredient, bupropion, tends to help people lose weight, especially when combined with diet and exercise. In fact, bupropion is one ingredient in the weight-loss medication called Contrave. People who take Wellbutrin Xl may see a weight loss of anywhere from two to 10%, although weight changes may vary based on many factors, including lifestyle changes. However, it’s also important to note that some people who took Wellbutrin Xl gained weight in clinical studies. If weight loss is a consideration, consult your healthcare professional for medical advice.

What drug is similar to Wellbutrin Xl?

If you find that Wellbutrin Xl is not the right drug for you, there are other alternatives. In fact, there are several categories of antidepressants. For example, an SSRI antidepressant such as Lexapro (escitalopram), or an SNRI antidepressant such as Effexor (venlafaxine) may be a better option for some individuals. Because so many factors go into selecting the appropriate medication, it’s important to discuss medication selection with your healthcare provider, who can advise you on the medication that would be best for you.
