The generic name of Muse is alprostadil. There is currently no generic version of Muse available on the market.
Muse is a urethral suppository used to treat erectile dysfunction. It contains alprostadil, a vasodilator that helps improve blood flow to the penis by relaxing the blood vessels and smooth muscles in the penis. Muse can improve the ability to get and maintain an erection.
Muse is administered directly to the urethral lining of the penis. The onset of effect is within five to 10 minutes after administration. The duration of effect is approximately 30 to 60 minutes, although the duration can vary by individual. You should only use Muse as prescribed by your doctor or healthcare provider.
Muse should not be taken as a sexual aid by men who do not have erectile dysfunction. If used improperly without the guidance of a healthcare provider, Muse may cause damage to the penis.
Before taking Muse, tell your doctor if:
you have a deformed penis, penile implant, or any other penile problems
you have other health problems, such as polycythemia, thrombocythemia, leukemia, multiple myeloma, or sickle cell anemia
you are taking high blood pressure medications
you are allergic to alprostadil, the active ingredient in Muse
Side effects while taking Muse are rare and usually go away on their own without treatment. Common side effects may include pain or discomfort in the penis, urethra, and testes during and after administration. Other possible side effects include dizziness, headache, back pain, and flu-like symptoms. Bruising or blood clots in the penis may occur due to incorrect administration of the drug. Consult with a healthcare provider if you experience any side effects while using Muse.
Serious side effects of Muse include low blood pressure (hypotension) and fainting (syncope). Avoid hazardous tasks, such as operating machinery or driving, while using Muse.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience an erection lasting more than 4 hours, severe pain in the penis, or severe swelling of the testes after administration.
This is not a complete list of side effects. Consult your doctor or healthcare professional for additional information and medical advice regarding other possible side effects or drug interactions. You can also report negative side effects to the FDA.
Muse is a brand-name drug that contains alprostadil and is only available as a urethral suppository. However, alprostadil is available in different forms under different brand names. Prostin VR is an injectable solution containing alprostadil that is injected intravenously (IV). Unlike Muse, Prostin VR is approved to help keep the ductus arteriosus open in infants with certain congenital heart defects.
Alprostadil is also available as an intracavernous injection administered directly into the spongy tissue of the penis (corpus cavernosum). The brand names for this form of alprostadil are Caverject and Edex. Edex comes as a single-dose, dual-chamber cartridge, while Caverject comes as a single-dose, dual-chamber syringe system. The starting doses are usually given in a doctor’s office, and the dosage is adjusted according to the individual’s response to treatment.
Like Muse, Caverject and Edex are not typically used as first-line options for ED. Consult a healthcare provider who can answer any questions you may have about the best treatment option for you.
