The active ingredient in Caverject Impulse, alprostadil, is a form of prostaglandin, a hormone that naturally occurs in the body. Alprostadil relaxes and widens the smooth muscle in the arteries that supply blood to the penis. Blood flow increases and blood flows rapidly into the corpora cavernosa.
The “Impulse” in Caverject Impulse refers to the dual-chamber syringe. Normally, Caverject Impulse is reconstituted right before injection, that is, the freeze-dried powdered version of the drug is mixed with saline by the physician, who then draws the mixture into a syringe for injection. However, the dual-chamber syringe allows patients to perform this critical step. Your prescribing physician will show you how to assemble the syringe, mix the two chambers, and inject the solution.
