Astellas Pharma U.S., Inc. manufactures Myrbetriq. Generic Myrbetriq (mirabegron) is not currently available in the U.S. If Myrbetriq doesn’t work for you, your doctor may recommend a different FDA-approved OAB medication such as Ditropan XL (oxybutynin), which is available in a generic form.
Myrbetriq uses include relief for the following overactive bladder symptoms:
Urinary incontinence (the involuntary leakage of urine)
Frequent urination
Sudden urges to urinate
The active ingredient in Myrbetriq is called mirabegron, which helps relieve OAB symptoms by relaxing the bladder muscle (detrusor) and helping the bladder store more urine for a longer period of time. Mirabegron works as a beta-3 adrenergic agonist that binds to beta-3 receptors and relaxes the smooth muscles in the bladder.
Myrbetriq is often taken in combination with another drug called Vesicare, also known as solifenacin. Your doctor may recommend both medications for the treatment of OAB. Myrbetriq is administered as a daily oral tablet or suspension. The dosage of Myrbetriq may be adjusted after four to eight weeks. Always consult with a healthcare provider about any concerns you may have about dosage with Myrbetriq.
Myrbetriq is available as an extended-release tablet in strengths of 25 mg or 50 mg. A prescription of Myrbetriq is usually filled as a 30-day supply of 50 mg tablets. Myrbetriq is also available as an extended-release oral suspension in a strength of 8 mg/mL.
Your prescription of Myrbetriq will be written by a healthcare provider based on your symptoms, condition, and response to treatment. You may choose the best time to take Myrbetriq, but you should take it regularly around the same time every day. It's usually taken once daily with or without a meal.
The most common side effects of Myrbetriq include headache, urinary tract infections, high blood pressure, and swelling or pain in the nose or throat. Myrbetriq may also cause dry mouth, constipation, and a fast heartbeat when taken in combination with solifenacin. In children, the most common side effects of Myrbetriq are urinary tract infections, pain or swelling in the nose or throat, headache, and constipation.
Tell your healthcare provider if you have a history of high blood pressure (hypertension) before taking Myrbetriq. Your doctor may recommend monitoring your blood pressure if you have a history of high blood pressure.
If you have a bladder obstruction or are taking other medications for OAB, taking Myrbetriq may increase the risk of an inability to empty your bladder (urinary retention). Seek help from your healthcare provider if you experience urinary retention while taking Myrbetriq.
If you believe you are having an allergic reaction to Myrbetriq, you should seek emergency medical attention. Signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, difficulty breathing, and swelling of the face, lips, or throat.
Myrbetriq can interact with certain drugs that are processed in the liver. Myrbetriq can increase the levels of certain drugs, such as propafenone, thioridazine, and flecainide in the body, which can lead to adverse effects. Ask your healthcare provider about other potential drug interactions.
Speak with your healthcare provider to discuss other possible side effects, adverse events, and drug interactions before taking Myrbetriq. Tell your healthcare provider about any medical conditions you may have or other medications you may be taking before starting treatment.
How long it takes for Myrbetriq to start working can vary. It may take four to eight weeks of treatment before you start seeing an improvement in symptoms. Complete improvement in symptoms may not be seen until up to 12 weeks after starting treatment for some people.
Do not suddenly stop taking this medication, even if you begin to feel better. Refer to your medication guide for instructions should you miss a dose.
Other prescription medications are available to treat overactive bladder. Antimuscarinic drugs like Ditropan XL (oxybutynin) and Detrol (tolterodine) help relax the bladder to relieve symptoms. These alternatives to Myrbetriq are also available as generic drugs that are usually cheaper than brand-name drugs. Consult with a healthcare provider for medical advice on the best and most affordable treatment option for you.
