What is Entresto?

Entresto is an FDA-approved prescription medication that contains a combination of sacubitril and valsartan. It works by widening blood vessels, promoting better blood flow, and reducing stress on the heart. Entresto is used to treat certain types of heart failure and is usually used along with other medications. More specifically, it is FDA-approved to:

  • Lower the risk of cardiovascular death and heart failure hospitalization in adults with chronic heart failure

  • Treat symptomatic heart failure with systemic left ventricular systolic dysfunction in pediatric patients one year and older

Is Entresto used to treat end-stage heart failure?

Entresto uses include people with chronic heart failure (classified as NYHA Class II-IV) and reduced ejection fraction to lower the risk of heart failure hospitalization and cardiovascular death. NYHA stands for New York Heart Association. 

  • Class II means that symptoms are mild, and there is a slight limitation of activity

  • Class III indicates more limitations in activity and feeling comfortable only when at rest

How do I store Entresto?

Entresto should be stored at room temperature, away from direct light, heat, and moisture. Keep Entresto out of reach and sight of children and pets.

What are the side effects of Entresto?

Common side effects of Entresto include low blood pressure, high potassium levels, cough, dizziness, and kidney failure. Other common side effects may include dizziness, fatigue, joint and back pain, and diarrhea.

Most side effects do not require medical attention; however, if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, get emergency medical help.

Talk to your healthcare provider if you plan to become pregnant while taking Entresto, as this medication can cause harm to an unborn baby and should not be taken during pregnancy. What drugs should not be taken with Entresto?

Some notable interactions with Entresto include:

  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors such as Altace (ramipril), Vasotec (enalapril), or Zestril (lisinopril)

  • ARBs such as Benicar (olmesartan), Cozaar (losartan), or Diovan (valsartan)

  • Lithium

  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as aspirin, Celebrex (celecoxib), Mobic (meloxicam), Motrin (ibuprofen), and naproxen

  • Potassium-sparing diuretics such as Aldactone (spironolactone) or triamterene

  • Potassium supplements

  • Tekturna (aliskiren)—this drug should not be taken with Entresto in patients with diabetes

Before taking Entresto, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist for medical advice for additional information about possible drug interactions. 

When should you not take Entresto? 

You should not take Entresto if you:

  • Are allergic to sacubitril, valsartan, or any inactive component of Entresto

  • Have a history of angioedema (swelling under the skin) from previous use of an ACE inhibitor or ARB drug

  • Take an ACE inhibitor or ARB drug

  • Have diabetes and take a medicine called Tekturna (aliskiren) 

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding

  • Have severe liver problems

What can I take instead of Entresto? 

Entresto contains two drugs in one pill: sacubitril, which is a neprilysin inhibitor, and valsartan, which is an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB). While there are no other drugs in this class that contain both drugs in one pill, there are other alternatives that can be used for heart failure.
