What is Desowen?
Desowen is a prescription topical cream that relieves itching, pain, swelling, and redness due to allergies, skin irritation, eczema, or psoriasis. The active ingredient in Desowen is desonide, a corticosteroid, which works by preventing the body from producing chemicals that produce swelling (inflammation). Skin inflammation causes irritation, itching, redness, and discomfort of allergies, eczema, psoriasis, and other skin problems.
Desowen is available as a cream, ointment, or lotion and is applied to the affected area two or three times a day.
What are the side effects of Desowen?
Most side effects of Desowen occur on the skin where it has been applied and includes burning, itching, scaly skin, oily skin, unwanted hair growth, pimples, loss of skin color, stretch marks, and crusting.
Topical steroids can be absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream, so side effects may occur throughout the body, such as blurred vision, swelling, weight gain, nausea, diarrhea, high blood sugar, and muscle weakness. Desonide, when absorbed into the body, can also cause mood changes and insomnia.
Allergic reactions are rare, but you should discontinue Desowen if you notice rashes, hives, swelling, or any other sign of an allergic reaction.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. If you have questions about side effects, consult with your doctor or pharmacist.
